Research
Foundation House undertakes and contributes to research concerned primarily with the well-being of people of refugee backgrounds settled in Australia, including their access to health, welfare and other services that are responsive to their needs.
Examples of current projects (2018) are:
- An investigation of the well-being of children from Syria and Iraq as they settle in Australia. Children are asked about their well-being using a child-friendly computer assisted interview that is translated into Arabic, the working language of most children from Middle Eastern countries. The research gives children from refugee backgrounds a voice and a suitable way of expressing their views with confidence.
- A study of the learning and wellbeing outcomes of students of refugee backgrounds in three mainstream Victorian secondary schools (years 9 to 11). Students are asked for their perspectives about what helps and hinders their learning and wellbeing in English as an Additional Language programs and in the school overall.
- Bridging the Gap is a partnership program led by Murdoch Childrens Research Institute, that brings together health service clinicians and managers, policy makers and researchers to bring about sustainable improvements in the quality of maternity and early childhood health care to improve health and health care outcomes for families of refugee background.
